Jessica talks to Telegraph

Although it is not so long since Jessica Brown Findlay left Downton Abbey, she is rarely recognised as Lady Sybil, the character she played on the show to such heartbreaking effect. Minus the corsetry, the satin and pearls, and without the background effects of chinking china and the bowing and scraping of servants, she is surprisingly like any other 23-year-old. Of course, she is a particularly beautiful one, dressed today at her publicist’s London office in a simple striped T-shirt and jeans, her hair, tinged with red, flowing.

“The only time I’ve been sort of recognised was in the States,” she says. “I was working on an independent movie called Lullaby in which I play a New York Jewish lawyer. To get the accent right, I decided not to drop it, even when I wasn’t working.

“I was in a coffee shop and someone said to me, ‘You sound just like an American Lady Sybil!’. I nearly died – how embarrassing to admit that you’re walking around pretending to be an American! I thought: ‘Oh God, no. You’re a proper actor now.”

Still, it is not surprising that it was an American who rumbled her disguise.Downton Abbey has taken the US by storm. It is regularly watched by 17 million viewers, many of whom gather for dinner parties organised around Sunday-night viewing sessions. When series three launched, the cast – including Lady Sybil – went on a road trip through America and found themselves feted like British royalty.

Jessica Talks ‘Gripping’ Lead Role In New Drama Labyrinth

written by Ana on 25 March 2013

The star said that she was instantly taken by Mosse’s tale. “It’s a gripping story, sometimes violent and dark, and instead of a man leading this journey, there are two women,” she comments to the Daily Express.

“They carry that story and the weight of the emotion. As a female artist, you don’t come across a lot of powerful roles, and so when I did, I had to grab it with two hands,” continues Jessica, who as a youngster trained with the National Youth Ballet before being cast in Downtown, which had numerous nominations at the 70th Golden Globes.

Of course Jessica is no stranger to a meaty drama, and her character will be facing many trials and tribulations. However the young actress claims that the traumas her character has to endure were part of the appeal. Jessica’s character Alaïs has to go through torturous scenarios in her search for the Holy Grail. Along the way, she suffers many losses, as well as discovering that her husband, Guilhem (Emun Elliot, The Paradise), has been cheating on her with her sister, Oriane (Katie McGrath, Merlin).

The actress’s star power in Hollywood is due to maximize as she is now making the movie Winter’s Tale with Colin Farrell, Russell Crowe, Will Smith and Jennifer Connelly.

Labyrinth DVD out Monday April 1st

Downton Abbey’s Jessica Brown Findlay stars in Labyrinth, a two-part adaptation of Kate Mosse’s best-selling novel which is coming to Channel 4 this weekend. Joining the former star of ITV’s hit period drama are a host of famous faces including acting veteran John Hurt, Merlin’s Katie McGrath, The Paradise’s Emun Elliott, Harry Potter’s Tom Felton, Vanessa Kirby, Sebastian Stan and John Lynch.

Labyrinth is based on the novel of the same name by Kate Mosse. Set in France during both 1209 and 2005, the tale interweaves the stories of two women, Alais (Brown Findlay) and Alice (Kirby). In the present day, archeologist Alice uncovers two shattered skeltons and alabyrinth-engraved ring in a long-undisturbed cave while 800 years ago in medieval France young herbalist Alais is entrusted with hiding the secrets contained within three sacred books.

Labyrinth was adapted by Adrian Hodges, co-creator of ITV’s Primeval and the screenwriter for My Week with Marilyn.

Labyrinth is on Saturday 30 and Sunday 31 March at 9:00pm on Channel 4
